Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor really is “the money fight”

Both fighters have made it clear they agreed to Saturday’s bout for one reason: the purse.

It’s going to be quite large. A huge number of people are expected to tune in to watch; many for the sheer spectacle of seeing an MMA fighter go up against a boxer.

Industry experts have speculated that the fight could surpass $500 million, which was a record set by the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight in 2015.

“This is like in ‘Rocky 3’ when he fights Hulk Hogan,” said Jesse Lawrence, founder of TicketIQ. “It’s an interspecies struggle. This is an exhibition.”

Lawrence said he expects the overall gross revenue for the fight will likely exceed the Pacquiao fight because of its unique pairing.

Mayweather came out of retirement for Saturday’s big event. McGregor crossed over from MMA, and stands to make more money than ever before in his career. If the fight does bring in more than $500 million,

Mayweather should get a cut of over $300 million while McGregor will likely get about $150 million.
The fight is expected to be a major spectacle between two outspoken characters whose polarizing personalities have created ardent fans and passionate haters.

McGregor upped the ante when he told Mayweather: “Dance for me, boy!” Many construed the comment as racist. Mayweather later used a homophobic slur to address McGregor.

It’s no wonder people are invested. Many are tuning in just to see one of them lose.

In Mayweather’s case there’s the additional excitement of his defending an undefeated record. Some are hoping he gets knocked off his pedestal.

The World Boxing Council, which sanctioned the fight, has created a special “money belt” with 3,360 diamonds, 600 sapphires, 300 emeralds, 1.5 kilograms of solid 24-carat gold and alligator leather.

Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor is here – but who do you put your money on?

Both fighters confirmed in June the bout will go ahead on August 26, bringing together two of the biggest names in their disciplines.

Mayweather, who retired in 2015 with an unbeaten record of 49-0, and UFC lightweight champion McGregor will clash in a 12-round fight in Las Vegas after teasing the event for nearly a year.

“McGregor is a tough competitor. People all around the world demanded this fight so I had to give them what they wanted to see,” Mayweather is quoted as saying by sports website BlackSportsOnline.com.

“They asked for this fight. I was in retirement, but they wanted me back and I’m back.”

The multi-division boxing world champion is favorite to beat McGregor, who never boxed professionally, in Las Vegas. Money is already being placed on both fighters.

But So much for an impartial announcer …

One of the guys commentating on the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight hates Conor McGregor’s guts with a passion … which begs the question, why is Showtime allowing Paulie Malignaggi to call it?!

Paulie was Conor’s training camp sparring partner until a nasty breakup last month. Since then, Paulie’s been on a media blitz, blasting Conor to every media outlet that will have him on.

He’s called McGregor everything from a dirtbag to a bum fighter — and insinuated that he was set up by McGregor’s people to be a fall guy in order to make Conor look like a legit boxer.

Despite the declaration of war, Showtime says Paulie will remain on the broadcast team — they see the situation as a “non-story.”

But it’s a big story … commentators have a BIG influence on how the public sees the fight and a constant, slanted trashing of McGregor could unfairly hurt his image.

In most cases, announcers tasked with working major sporting events like NFL or MLB games are mandated by networks to keep their opinions to themselves until the game.

So, why not Showtime? They won’t say …

Conor McGregor in brawl with Floyd Mayweather’s entourage and squares up to Paulie Malignaggi at Vegas ceremony
The two men almost came to blows five days early when their respective entourages were involved in a bad-tempered fracas, before Malignaggi then squared up to McGregor

Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor became involved in a backstage brawl at Tuesday’s Grand Arrival ceremony ahead of their fight this weekend,

before Paulie Malignaggi then confronted the Irishman on an explosive afternoon in Las Vegas.
The Arrivals ceremony, held on the Toshiba Plaza

outside the T-Mobile Arena, had been a relatively restrained affair until the brawl involving both Mayweather and McGregor’s entourages.

Badou Jack and Nathan Cleverly had both been introduced to the crowd, before Mayweather appeared on stage and was briefly interviewed.

He thanked his fans “across the world”, before again repeating that the fight was unlikely to go the distance. “I told you before that this isn’t going to go the distance,” he said. “So if you’re going to bet, bet that it won’t go.”
The trouble came when Mayweather and his huge entourage exited the stage, and passed McGregor’s camp, who were accompanying the Irishman to his interview.
Both entourages walked slowly towards one another, before there was a large melee, with several photographers and journalists finding themselves caught up in the fracas.
